Alliance MP Discovers He's Really A Liberal
Sunday, January 26, 2002 - Ottawa

Canadian Alliance MP Joe "Pesky" Solo had a coming out today, with news that he was really a closet Liberal.

The former Liberal Party Youth organizer was smitten in his admiration for the Liberal Party, and his close friendship with Liberal Leader John Chretien.

A tearful Joe told news cameras, "I really missed the old guy, he's swell and stuff."

Political analysts cited the defection as a major event, certain to affect the current leadership race within the Canadian Alliance.

"I think it spells the end of the Canadian Alliance," said a political insider, who asked not to be named, but has made similar predictions about the Canadian Alliance and the predecessor Reform Party since 1987.

"If this is not the end, then certainly it is not good. I might even characterize it as being 'bad' or worse. At least I hope they go away, as they've really done much better than I'd hoped. I mean, it makes me really, really sad. They are not nice to me or my party. I'll stand up to them though, or my name isn't Joe Clarke," the anonymous source said.

Canadian Alliance leadership contenders Stephen Helper and Diane Abrunettie declared that they were unphased by the events, because they were too busy criticizing each other. "I'm not terrifically concerned about Joe," said Abrunettie, "I am too busy helping Canadian Alliance members realise that my worthy, upright opponent Stephen Helper is truly the anti-Christ."

The other main leadership contender, former leader Stalkwell Day, was unavailable for comment as he was rollerblading home from Church.
