Gang Activity in Victoria Suburb
Reported gang activity has local teens on edge. Tuesday, February 26, 2002 - Victoria, British Columbia

In a startling development, it is reported that two youths proclaiming to be involved in a real live gang were arrested in the quiet, retirement-oriented Oak Bay suburb of Victoria.

It seems the youths, originally from California, were found stumbling in the sand on Willows Beach last Saturday.

"We just saw them stumbling around, looking confused and disoriented." said a witness who reported their presence to the seven-officer Oak Bay Police force.

"This is very exciting for us," said a Police Constable, on condition of anonymity. "A real, live gang member, right here on our beach. Next thing you know, I'll be on C.O.P.S."

It is believed the youths were captured by a rival gang, and dropped in the ocean to drown. Somehow they survived the turbulent Pacific Ocean, and washed ashore in Victoria.

"The Strait of Juan de Fuca," said a Coast Guard representative, referring to the waterway off the Pacific Ocean that Willows Beach connects to, "has washed up some very unusual things, but never, in my recollection, vicious gang members."

Local teens indicated concern when several unpopular students from their school started stumbling around in a disoriented fashion on Willows Beach in the days following, apparently in imitation of the gang members from California.

"We've got our share of homey's," said Kylie, a grade 11 student, "they always wanted to be like real gang members, and now they have real live role models. It's like scary, scary stuff!"

The gang members deportation hearing proceeds today.
