People Named Arthur Anderson Speak Out About Poor Treatment
Sunday, April 20, 2002 - Toronto, Ontario
What's in a name?
"Torment, day and night!" answers Arthur Anderson, a Toronto banker who has been personally feeling the pain of the non-eponymous accounting firm's fall from grace.
"First, it was being a visible minority, then it was the jokes about having the same name as an accounting firm, and now this!"
Local Bank Manager Edward Jones refused suggestions that he was intentionally introducing Mr. Anderson using a fake name. "There are alot of people who work at the bank, sometimes I have a hard time remembering his name."
Apparently Mr. Jones is a big fan of the television sit-com "The Cosby Show", and mistakenly calls his Mr. Anderson by his favourite character's name, "Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable".
Mr. Anderson's immediate supervisor, Sara Lee, indicated that she was only joking around when she introduced Mr. Anderson as "Han Solo" to one major client. "The client was a big fan of Star Wars, and an important client. I would have called myself 'Princess Leia' if I thought it would keep the client happy."
Similar complaints are surfacing across the U.S., Canada, and around the world.
An inside source at Ontario's Department of Vital Statistics told BCB news that 14 Arthur Andersen's, 3 Art Andersen's, and 2 Arthur Anderson's have applied to have their names changed since February 1st.
"It's a plague upon the name!" complained our Toronto-based Arthur Anderson, who opted for the less radical approach of being called Artie Anderson for the time being, "Now I know how all the Tonya Harding's in the world feel."
