Jennifer Lopez' Québec Separatist Connection
Wednesday, June 18, 2003 - Québec City, Québec
From "In Livin Color" to movie scripts to "On The 6" to "J.Lo" to this?
It seems that it may be true: "Jenny from the Block" may soon be "Jenny from the Bloc".
Rumours have been swirling around for months that "Maid in Manhattan" superstar Jennifer Lopez will be lending her celebrity to the Québec separatist party, Bloc Québecois. Some Hollywood watchers believe disagreement around this issue may be the reason why she fired her long-time publicist.
She and Ben Affleck are reportedly moving to Montréal late this year, in preparation for the anticipated 2004 federal election.
BCB News wanted to know the facts. We made numerous inquiries, but could not substantiate the rumours.
A Quebec political insider, who asked not to be named, noted "why on earth would a Mexican-American celebrity get behind a French-language separatist movement in Canada? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of. Are you a complete idiot? What sort of publication do you work for, you moron. Don't ever bother me again!"
Although unusual in Canada, it is not entirely unusual in America for celebrities to make political entries in the United States: Arnold Schwarzeneger is considering a run for California Governor, Jerry Springer is considering a Senate run, and Ronald Reagan was a famous actor long before he became President.
